Beating The Bookies Since 2006: One Winning Tipster Reveals All

.
Longevity is not usually a word readily associated with tipsters and with good reason, as many have a reputation for packing it in as soon as a bad run of form hits.

Therefore, one of the key qualities we look for in any tipster is their ability to stick around and be consistently good. To treat losing and winning runs as level-headed as possible and to offer a well run but most of all profitable service (Its one reason why the average age for a service we place in our Hall of Fame is well over 4 years!)

One notable long-running tipster service goes by the name of Winning Racing Tips and has been run by Paul Ruffy since July 2006. We have been tracking it ourselves since 2007 and updating SBC members on its ongoing profitable performance ever since then.

In recognition of this longevity, we recently sat down with Paul as part of our ‘How I Make Money Betting‘ series – to try and tap into just how he has been so successful for so long.

Below are a few excerpts from the interview…

Hi Paul, thanks for agreeing to be interviewed by us. Can you start off by telling us how you got involved in the betting world? Continue reading

A Bookie Insider Reveals All In Our Latest Betting Magazine

When it comes to making money betting, the battle-lines are very clearly drawn. It’s a do or die battle between punter and bookmaker.

If we lose money, the bookie makes it and vice versa – we only triumph when they fail.

These battle lines can sometimes get blurred, what with the myriad of bookie PR reps sharing ‘helpful tips’ or TV adverts offering you free bets – it can seem they are looking to help you out.

Not so, they simply do this in the belief that the majority who go onto bet with the bookmaker they represent will lose money…and often they are right…but not always.

Vive La Betting Resistance!

Here at the Smart Betting Club we are part of the ‘resistance’ – fighting back to help those punters trying to win long-term as unlike many in the betting game – we don’t have our snout in the bookies pockets.

One way we fight back is by attempting to find out as much about our enemy as possible, which is why we secured a real coup this month by landing an exclusive interview with a former bookie trader.

Freshly published in our very latest SBC Magazine (SBC #81 released today), he was willing to spill the beans on all aspects of bookmaking, including everything we don’t see from our side of the fence. Continue reading

Betting Secrets From A Real-Life Profitable Punter

One of the first websites we turn to each day is the ‘Portfolio Investor’, which details the ongoing progress of one man’s real-life quest to make money betting through tipsters.

Run by SBC member, Rowan, his entertaining blog openly shares on the tipsters he follows, the profits being made and just how he juggles his betting around the demands of modern life.

Curious to find out more, we recently interviewed Rowan to find out just what makes him tick. Below are a few excerpts from our recently published interview:

SBC: Why did you choose betting over other forms of investment such as the stock market?

Rowan: Well I did try the stock market for a while with an ISA or two, and quite frankly over eight years, the returns were pitiful.  In fact one of them was showing a loss. I couldn’t help but think that betting, although higher risk of course, had a lot more potential because of the ability to turn over your bank much more frequently.  I actually used the money from the ISAs to provide the funds for my betting bank. Inspired or foolish? Not too sure, but I have no regrets so far!

SBC: Describe your approach to betting, how do you decide upon the make-up of your portfolio and the services you join?

Rowan: I’ve learnt over time that I don’t do losing spells well. I have the sort of personality which dictates that I would rather make a long term 8% ROI with relatively few massive downs than a 15% that comes at the cost of having to ride a rollercoaster of huge highs and depressing lows.  Thus over time, I’ve learnt to go primarily with services that demonstrate higher strike rates and shorter losing runs.  I’ve learnt that the shrewd use of Asian Handicaps can make the path we tread smoother too, so perhaps I pay more attention to services that use this angle in their betting.

I simply look for services which display characteristics that the SBC have taught me to look for. Transparency of results, long term record, customer service, and of course value for money are all boxes I look to see ticked now before subscribing to a service. Of course the reports in the SBC mags have all this info to hand – I still think that even as the SBC has grown over the years, its core strength remains it’s tipster reports.

How Experts Like Ed Hawkins Win When Betting

According to renowned author Malcolm Gladwell, to become truly good at something takes at least 10,000 hours of honest endeavour and continued practice.

Be it the Beatles playing every night for 8 hours in Hamburg before they made it big, or in our cases, an expert who spends his life poring over betting markets, there is much to be learnt from those who have put in the hard yards.

Its one reason why  each month at the Smart Betting Club, we conduct an interview with an expert from the betting industry, to try and tap into their knowledge base for the benefit of our members.

In doing so we can get answers to questions such as:

  • How exactly do they make money betting?
  • And most importantly…how can you do the same?

All of this is why we were so delighted when the Times and Betfair betting columnist Ed Hawkins agreed to answer some of our questions in our latest magazine. Continue reading

The SBC Interviews: Laurence Lambourn – The UK’s Top Tipster.

If Carlsberg did tipsters, then it’s fair to say they may well do so in the guise of Laurence Lambourn, who many of you may be more familiar as the brains behind top tipster service Equine Investments.

Since April 2004, Laurence has been a constant scourge of the bookmaker, taking in excess of 2450 pts profit from 2652 bets during a 7 year reign of absolute terror on the odds compilers.

Such expertise does not come cheap and nor do opportunities come around too often to sample Laurence’s wares as his membership quotas are generally filled.

However, recently, Laurence was kind enough to grant us an audience where we were able to reap the benefit of his wisdom with a series of practical tips for SBC members looking to improve their betting performance.

Read a selection of our interview with Laurence here… Continue reading

The SBC Interviews: Hugh Taylor

Hugh Taylor is a name that strikes fear into many a horse racing odds compiler and he is without doubt one of the most renowned names in the tipping world. His betting record via At The Races is second to none and his tips quite literally can turn betting markets upside down within minutes. When he speaks, people listen and we are delighted to be able to share an exclusive interview with Hugh himself, courtesy of the Smartersig service.

This interview was originally posted on the blog back in February 2011, but such has been the interest in it since then, we thought it well worth re-posting.

The Newmarket Wizards – Hugh Taylor

It has been a while since the last inclusion in the Newmarket Wizards collection. Results on the At The Races web site however prompted me to get in touch with ex Smartie and now resident tipster at ATR, Hugh Taylor. Hugh could be described as the Pricewise of ATR, tipping value horses via the web site at around 10.00am every day. Giving daily tips means his tipping profile quickly builds up and his prowess can be checked via a past results section on the site. Continue reading
