Britain’s Got Tipsters – The Winners Revealed!

Finally, after 3 months and nearly 5000 tips, the winner of the inaugural SBC Britain’s Got Tipsters Horse Racing contest is announced today and it’s a big well done to ‘The Form Analyst’ who has scooped first prize.

He wins the award thanks to his record of 51.7 pts profit from 1291 bets at a ROI of 7.60% and crucially – his very strong betting bank growth figure of 103%.

It was a tough fight at the finish with 2nd placed ‘Chris Patti’ pushing him very hard in the final week but The Form Analyst was the overall winner based on the combined results from votes cast by SBC members and the judging panel.

A Brief Recap

Firstly, to briefly recap for that not familiar with it, Britain’s Got Tipsters was our quest to find the best Racing Tipster from a shortlist of 12 that started posting their tips back at the end of June 2015.

Over the course of the 3 months during which the contest ran, each of the 12 tipsters posted their advice on the SBC Forum for members to follow and we provided weekly updates on performance (with full spreadsheets) to track their progress. Although as expected, not all of the tipsters lasted the pace, 7 of the contestants stuck it out and a number showcased some great tipping skills as the results will prove…

The Winner – The Form Analyst

‘The Form Analyst’ secured first place based on his high volume approach with around 15 tips advised each day. These were a mixture of win, place and each way bets at average odds of around 7/1.

In total he picked up a 51.7 pt profit from 680 points staked over the course of 1291 bets advised. This equated to a ROI of 7.60% and a Return on Capital (ROC) of 103.40%.

In terms of monthly performance, each of June, July & August showcased a fine profit from a good range of bets, whilst September has seen a small loss thus far. The runner-up prize was scooped by statistician, Chris Patti who really impressed members and judges alike with his excellent performance over the course of the contest.

Advising bets at Betfair SP, Chris made a profit of 61.5 pts profit from 133 bets over the course of the 3 month competition with a series of winners at value prices. This equated to an outstanding ROI of 46.24% and a Return on Capital of around 34.17% bank growth.

Over the course of the contest, Chris made a significant profit from each of the 3 main months in July, August and September with an average of around 1-2 tips advised each day.

Third Place – Josh Fletch

A very honorable mention is due for the third placed contestant, Josh, who despite a bad run in September, did still post a profit of 13.8 pts at a ROI of 17.47% from 76 bets advised.

Josh certainly doesn’t take the easy route to betting profits with his average priced tip just under 10/1, making him vulnerable to the occasional losing run.

As he has a fairly selective tipping approach – an average of 25 per month, he also needs a much longer period than just 3 months to showcase his skills. Mindful of this, Josh has agreed to continue to post ALL of his tips on the SBC Forum for the foreseeable future so we can monitor his performance over a more relevant period of time.

Fourth To Seventh Place

A big thank-you must also go to the other tipsters that finished between 4th and 7th place in the contest. Not only did they take the time to post their tips for the full 3 month period, but a number showcased good potential that hasn’t as yet translated into results.

4th Place – Rayjon

In-particular we are quite keen to see how the 4th placed tipster, Rayjon fares in the future as he eked out a small profit from laying at Betfair SP over the course of 2384 bets.

It wouldn’t take much of an increase in profits to make his approach viable and we are really pleased that he too has agreed to continue posting on the forum for members to follow. Laying is hard – especially at Betfair SP so to breakeven is quite an achievement in itself.

5th, 6th & 7th Place

The Black Knight, Into The Black & Coranmc finished in 5th, 6th & 7th place respectively with performance records as below. Although none of the 3 have posted an overall profit, we are fully aware that this can all change over a longer period and are pleased that both The Black Knight and Coranmc have agreed to post their tips for free on the SBC Forum long-term.

How To Make Money On The Grand National

Many people dismiss the Grand National as a complete lottery, but don’t let the large field size fool you into thinking you can’t make money on the big race.

Ok we might not be talking a guaranteed fortune here, but there are some tricks and stats that could see you earn enough for a celebratory round at the pub…or maybe a little bit more.

1. Get The Best Free Tips

Saturday morning will be awash with insights and supposed expert opinion on who will win, but very few people are worth listening to.

We monitor dozens of profitable racing tipsters here at the Smart Betting Club and there are a few good free tipsters, but we can’t reveal all of them here. We can recommend the following sources though:

Betting Expert: A respectable betting and tipping community with their own Grand National preview available here.
Easy Odds: Another general betting site with free betting tips that are better than average.

2. Get a Quality Racing Card

One of the best, if not the best racing database out there is ProFormProfessional. Their ratings program is excellent and their system builder is a powerful way to build your own betting strategies.

If you just want to dip your toe in the water of statistical betting, then we recommend their race guides. They offer a fantastic visual form guide that includes speed ratings, trainer/ jockey form and a whole host of other features.

3. Stats – Focus On Favourites

Everyone’s dream is to pick out a big priced Grand National winner and earn bragging rights with your friends, not to mention a nice lump of cash.

It’s true that favourites haven’t been the punter’s friend in the last three years, with the last few winners coming in at 33/1, 66/1 and 25/1 SP. Let’s just say the bookmakers have been rather happy with those results, but up until 2012 backing all horses between 1 and 9 in the betting order would have produced a profit to Betfair prices since 1997.

The number one favourite (including joint favourites) has won four times historically since 1997. This is enough to make you a profit of £18 to £1 stakes which is an incredible 70% Return on Investment. Should the longer historical terms exert themselves, then focusing on horses in the top half of the betting order could be the way to go.

4. Place To Win

The Grand National is technically a 16 runner handicap paying out, which means you are paid out up to four places when each way betting, but most bookmakers (online) will pay out to five places with some even going up to six.

The front end is also a good shout for each way betting, especially if your bookie is paying out five places as they often do for the National. Some even pay out six places.

If backing all horses in the top three of the betting order, you historically have 1/3 chance of your horse at least placing. If backing all horses in the top six of the betting order, you have a 50/50 chance of your horse placing.

In the last three years the outsiders have won it, but the top rank of the betting order placed more often than not:

2012: Winner 33/1, but 2-4 were 16/1, 8/1 & 16/1.
2013: Winner 66/1, but 2^nd & 3^rd were 12/1 & 10/1.
2014: Winner 25/1, but 2^nd & 3^rd were 14/1 & 10/1.

7. Newspaper Coupons

A nice way to scrape some free bets is to check on what the dead tree press are running on the day of the National. There will be at least one or two papers running £1 or £2 no quibbles free bet coupons for you to use in shop or online.

You could find you pay for the price of your paper with a £1 winner, or if you’re feeling really cheeky, check your local takeaway for the day’s redtop!

Dont Believe The Hype – Here’s The Best ‘Free Tipster’

You’ve all seen the headlines, I’m sure. I imagine the first thing that many folk do when they’ve bought their copy of the Racing Post is to turn to the Pricewise pages to see what Tom Segal is tipping that day.

I also wouldn’t mind betting that the number of hits on the Attheraces website goes through the roof each morning when Hugh Taylor’s selections are due for publication. After all, these guys have proven themselves to be shrewd readers of the formbook. And what’s more, these tips are free!

If something seems too good to be true, then it usually is!

I’m sure you’ve heard this old adage. Thing is, it’s often spot on and never more so than when we look a little more closely at some of these big-name, superstar tipsters that give out their bets for free.

Let’s take Hugh Taylor. There is no doubt the bookies are scared of him. Why wouldn’t they be? Looking at the Attheraces website, we can see he’s had five consecutive years of producing a fine profit. 28% ROI in 2011, 31% ROI in 2012, and 32% in 2013. Not bad, eh? Not bad at all.

Of course, those profit figures are the results to the advised odds he quotes and the sad reality is you’re going to have to be darned quick on the button to get those. Like I said, the bookies don’t like him. They’re looking out for his tips too, and as soon as they’re released, they’re slashing prices faster than Ray Winstone can say “have a bang on that!”

As for Pricewise, well, good luck with getting their advised odds! What you gonna do? Get to the newsagent for 6 in the morning? Keep your finger on the refresh button hoping to be first to get the tips through online?

Something we put a lot of emphasis on here at the Smart Betting Club is how achievable it is for the average man on the street to get the odds the tipsters are tipping at. Or at the very least, finding out how easy is it is to get acceptably close to those advised prices. And with that in mind, we put in a lot of effort to check this out properly, in a real time environment.

Which is why, when someone asked us recently whether Pricewise or Hugh Taylor are in our “Best 55 tipsters” from our latest Tipster Profit Report, our answer was no, they’re not. They’re both good, obviously, but you just can’t get the odds on their picks. In other words, following these guys is a great idea in theory, but near useless in practice. Put bluntly, with these tips, the stated profits cannot be replicated, because the odds recommended aren’t actually available when you can put your bets on.

A free tipster that you CAN make money from

You maybe wondering where this article is going so let me explain with the help of this next example tipster and their record since January 2013, which is as follows…

Now if I said to you that these numbers have been achieved by a tipster that we’ve been tracking for years, who is possibly not quite as well-known as Pricewise or Hugh Taylor, but who is still free to follow, AND that these results were gained using odds that are available when the tips are released, what would you say?

The conclusion? That if following this tipster, we have to factor in a very small drop in the odds taken from those the tipster actually quotes himself. But we’re not seeing horses tipped at 20/1 that it is only possible to get 12/1 against, or rushing frantically to “snap up” 20/1 against a horse that only seconds ago had been tipped up at 33s!
