314,972 Real Bets Analysed. One Racing Service. Multiple Ways to Profit.

Our headline review examines a specialist horse racing tipster using mathematical modelling to identify value, with subscribers able to follow Singles, Doubles, Trixies, Patents and Lucky 15s.

And we’ve gone considerably further than simply examining the tipster’s published results.

Our data analyst examined 314,972 actual bets logged by users between 2024 and 2026.

These aren’t hypothetical returns or backtested selections. They’re bets genuinely placed by users.

The results make fascinating reading:

  • 13.35% combined ROI across the five betting formats.
  • 6.61% ROI on Singles, offering a straightforward approach to following the service.
  • 16.62% ROI on Doubles, highlighting the potential of multiple bets.
  • Profitable results also recorded across Trixies, Patents and Lucky 15s.

But headline returns only tell part of the story.

Our extensive review examines the different betting approaches, the influence of bookmaker concessions, historical drawdowns, betting bank requirements and the practical challenges of following the advice.

We also speak to an SBC member who has generated substantial profits using the service.

Our verdict? SBC STRONG BUY.

100 Punting Feats and Bad Beats: Paul Jones | SBC Podcast 109

What can 100 remarkable betting stories teach us about winning, losing and the fine margins that separate the two?

In Episode 109, I’m joined by Paul Jones, racing trends expert and author of the new book 100 Punting Feats and Bad Beats, featuring extraordinary gambling stories from some of the biggest names in betting, bookmaking, racing and poker.

From Andrew Black’s life changing betting successes to Nick Goff’s heartbreaking 500/1 World Cup near miss, we explore what these experiences tell us about value, variance, hedging and the psychology of gambling.

We also discuss some remarkable stories involving James Lovell, Alan Alger and Ed Chamberlain, and why making the right betting decision doesn’t always produce the right result.

The book brings together 100 contributors and has been produced with Graham Wheldon to raise funds for Action for AT, supporting research into a rare and serious childhood condition.

Topics covered include

  • Paul’s background in racing, betting and his work as a racing trends specialist
  • How racing trends can help narrow down large fields and identify potential betting opportunities
  • How popular racing trends have become absorbed into betting markets and how to best use them
  • Finding an edge in Eurovision betting and why timing your bets is increasingly important
  • The inspiration behind 100 Punting Feats and Bad Beats and how 100 contributors came together
  • Andrew Black’s extraordinary Grand National and Spring Double betting successes
  • Nick Goff’s agonising World Cup bet that came close to returning £250,000 at odds of 500/1
  • James Lovell’s remarkable story of a £250,000 liability on a local Welsh rugby match
  • Alan Alger and Ed Chamberlain on the risks and pressures of working in a bookmaker’s trading room
  • Hedging, missed opportunities and the psychological challenge of watching a huge potential win disappear
  • Why good betting decisions can still produce terrible outcomes, and what punters can learn from them
  • The charity behind the book and Paul’s hopes for future collections of betting stories

Why Bad Beats Make Better Stories
“I’d say it’s actually probably about two thirds bad beats and a third a successful punt. I think more people probably enjoy reading about the bad beats.”

The Pain of Almost Winning £250,000
“Losing isn’t what hurts. It’s the thinking you’re going to win. Trust me, that’s the bit that takes some getting over. And I know, because 12 years later, I’m still not.”

Nick Goff, quoted during the podcast from his contribution to the book.

The £250,000 Bookmaking Nightmare
“Before they knew it, on just this local rugby union game, they’ve got a liability of a quarter of a million pounds.”

Paul Jones, discussing James Lovell’s extraordinary story of taking bets on a local Welsh rugby competition.

The Biggest Bet Paul Wishes He Had Hedged
“My head was in my hands thinking, why on earth didn’t I hedge out when it was 1/10 Paris?”

Paul Jones, recalling his substantial bet on Paris to host the 2012 Olympics, which ultimately went to London.

Good Decisions, Bad Results
“It spoke to the fact that Alan had a great process. Just a bad outcome. He did everything right, but he couldn’t control what happened in the end. And it speaks to value betting.”

Pete, discussing Alan Alger’s bookmaking story.

When Racing Trends Lose Their Value
“25 years ago they didn’t impact the market at all. The market was then finding those horses to the extent, actually, that I think now they’re overbet.”

Why Antepost Betting Has Become Harder
“You go back 10, 15 years ago and say a nice horse wins a novice hurdle at Newbury. You’d probably get 33/1 first show for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Now it’d be 16/1 or 20/1. Bookmakers are taking less and less chances on antepost betting.”

Getting Ahead of the Eurovision Market
“You’ve got to try and get on before all the songs are in. If you can work out that this song’s going to represent Portugal three or four weeks before Portugal announce it as their winner, that’s a good way of getting in early.”

Beyond Bet365 & The Big Bookies: ‘Lesser Known’ UK Bookmakers Worth Knowing About

Finding value is one thing. Getting your bets on is another.

For anyone who has spent time trying to make a consistent profit from betting, bookmaker restrictions are an all-too-familiar problem.

You might follow an excellent tipster, have a profitable strategy, or regularly identify value in the markets, but none of that counts for much if you can’t get your bets accepted at the right prices.

So, where do you turn when the major bookmakers are no longer an option?

That’s the question we explore in our latest Smart Betting Club special report: Beyond the Big Bookmakers: Where Can Profitable Bettors Still Get Bets On?

This unique report is now available exclusively to SBC members. Join SBC today!

What’s Inside?

The report takes a detailed look at the current bookmaker environment, including the smaller, less familiar bookmakers operating in the UK.

Examining where they might offer worthwhile alternatives to the industry’s biggest names.

Among the areas we investigate are:

  • The smaller UK bookmakers worth investigating: Which lesser-known operators offer competitive odds, useful markets and additional betting opportunities?

  • The hidden connections between bookmakers: How shared ownership, software platforms and trading arrangements can mean seemingly independent brands have more in common than you might realise.

  • Where the value might lie: Why bookmakers using the same technology don’t necessarily offer identical odds, and how differences in pricing can create opportunities.

  • Account restrictions and betting limits: What bettors should understand before opening and funding new accounts, and why having more accounts doesn’t necessarily mean having more genuine betting opportunities.

  • Practical advice for profitable bettors: How to identify which bookmakers are worth prioritising and make better use of the accounts available to you.

Life Beyond Bet365, Sky and Ladbrokes (And others!)

If you are a profitable bettor, exploring the less familiar part of the bookmaker market will open up some valuable new opportunities.

Its what we do here at SBC – bet with smaller operators to increase our edge and return.

After all, we have real skin in the game and bet ourselves, so we can speak about this topic with personal lived experience.

And we know that just because Bet365 or Sky or Ladbrokes might have closed you down, it doesn’t mean its the end.

For the shrewd punter and SBC member it simply is the ‘end of the beginning‘ as there are so many additional betting options that exist in the UK to give you more places to get your bets on at worthwhile prices.

And this report is just one example of the content available to SBC members.

Alongside our special reports, members benefit from independent reviews of betting tipsters and services, detailed performance analysis, practical advice on everything from finding value to managing betting accounts, and regular insights into the challenges of profitable betting.

Our aim is to give serious bettors the information, research and independent perspective they need to make better-informed decisions about how, where and with whom they bet.

DragonBet’s James Lovell on Bookmaking, Sharp Bettors & the Betting Ring

What is it really like running an independent bookmaker in Britain in 2026, and what can understanding how bookmakers think, price and manage their customers teach us as smart bettors?

In Episode 108, I sit down with James Lovell, co founder of DragonBet and experienced racecourse bookmaker, to explore life on the other side of the betting counter.

James explains why bigger staking and sharper punters are increasingly returning to the racecourse, as competitive prices, online restrictions and reduced exchange liquidity make the betting ring an attractive alternative. You can read his thoughts on the topic here.

We also get inside DragonBet, where compliance now requires roughly twice as many people as trading, and discuss sharp bettors, restrictions, regulation and the growing threat from black market bookmakers.

Finally, James explains how increased taxation is affecting smaller operators and why, despite all these pressures, he remains optimistic about the future of independent bookmaking.

You can listen to Episode 108 FREE now via Apple / Spotify / YouTube and all other major podcast directories (search Smart Betting Club)

You can also support the SBC Podcast by visiting our podcast sponsor, Matchbook. You can get 150 days, commission free with them via this link.

Topics covered include

  • James’s journey from growing up in a bookmaking family to becoming a racecourse bookmaker
  • Bringing traditional racecourse bookmaking values into an online betting business
  • Why bigger staking and price sensitive punters are returning to the racecourse – especially with competitive pricing.
  • How online restrictions and compliance friction are influencing where people bet
  • The impact of declining exchange liquidity on bookmakers and punters
  • How large bets and AML checks are handled on course
  • Why compliance is now one of the biggest challenges facing independent bookmakers
  • How DragonBet approaches sharp and winning bettors
  • Why James believes bookmakers need customers who are trying to beat them
  • The competitive threat posed by unregulated and black market betting operators
  • Higher taxation, rising costs and why James believes DragonBet needs to grow rather than simply cut costs

The Return of Real Bookmaking
“Until a few years ago, you could be really lazy and just track the exchanges. Now you have to pay attention to your surroundings. It’s bringing back that old bookmaking skill again.”

Sharp Punters Are Part of Bookmaking
“I can’t say we want to take on every sharp punter in the world, but at the same time, we are bookmakers and we do want to have a bet. A bookmaker is not a bookmaker unless he’s got punters who are trying to beat him.”

Why Punters Are Returning to the Racecourse
“I’m taking the same amount of bets as I was a few years ago, but my average stake has gone up massively. It’s definitely the bigger punters. If you’re having a bigger bet, you’re more likely to shop around and notice the difference in prices.”

Regulation Does Not Remove the Demand to Bet
“The increase in stakes on the racecourse tells you one thing about over regulation. It doesn’t stop the demand. People still want to bet on horse racing. They’re just going to try and find somewhere else to go and do it.”

Compliance Versus Taking Bets
“The biggest shock to me when we launched, going from the racecourse to online, was how much smaller a part of the business trading is. We’re bookmakers. We want to be here taking bets, and it’s very easy to get distracted by other stuff such as compliance.”

Why Bookmakers Ask for Bank Statements
“You ask someone for a bank statement, I wouldn’t want to send my bank statement. I don’t want my missus to see my bank statement, never mind someone I don’t know at a bookmaker. But the truth is, to work within the Gambling Commission guidelines, there are certain instances where you have to ask for certain stuff.”

The Black Market Advantage
“These black market websites, their incentive is to do the opposite (than safer gambling). They want to provide the path of least friction for customers. Their advertising, they’re using no regulation as an advertising tool, and I just think it’s dangerous and wrong.”

You Cannot Cut Your Way to Growth
“You can cut your way to survival for a while, but ultimately you’ve got to grow your way out of it. We’re trying not to become a worse bookmaker and offer worse prices. We’re trying to become a bigger and better one.”

Treating Punters Fairly
“We’re fair bookmakers. We’re fair to punters. I can’t say that we’re going to take on every sharp punter, that would just be wrong. We’re a business trying to make money, but we’ll treat you properly.”
