SPORTS: One on a high, one on a low…but the margins are so tight!

A couple of winners for Sports Service 1 meant it was a profitable week for the Sports tipsters, and they also took SS1 onto a new profit high for the year to date.  It’s only a sliver over the previous high water mark, and when I tell you that just last week they were on their “deepest” drawdown so far encountered in 2022, you can see that the ‘spread’ isn’t very wide at all!  I say deepest drawdown – it reached a not so big -2.05 points.  Hardly a slump!

Suffering the flip side to this profit and loss coin is The Poacher.  A week that saw a point and a bit dropped means that it is now on a low point for the year, but again the fall has been preeeettty small…just under six points, which from a 40 point bank is not really something to get one’s boxers in a twist about.  It would be nice to see TP pick up a few points profit soon, but I’m about as far away from panic stations as I am from Pluto.

Not much else to add this week so I’ll leave it there for now.  Back tomorrow with a Racing report.

GOLF: THAT’S more like it!!!

The golfing portfolio took a decent step forward this week with PGA Profit and Weekly Golf Value both finding play-off winner Sam Burns at 30/1 over in the US, and Golf Insider tipping up DP Tour victor Victor (Roger, Roger!*) Perez at 50/1!

That win has wiped out a significant chunk of the losses Golf Insider had so far suffered this year, and had I backed the 80/1 winner of the lowest score in the final round market they tipped on Sunday, I think I might actually have eradicate them completely.

As for PGA Profit, well, they are on some kind of run now picking three tournament winners in just the past month!  That’s fabulous tipping in anyone’s book, and it has shown just how quickly things can turn around for a golf tipster who might be experiencing a bit of a slump.  We’ve gone from -127 points to +119 points in four weeks, and PGA Profit is now running at a near 30% ROI for the year for me.

As for Weekly Golf Value, the ytd ROI figure of 45% speaks for their excellence.  The only slight nagging worry is that we seem to have been on the right side of numerous play-offs, and the pessimist in me tells me that the positive variance will turn negative at some point.  Let’s not worry too much about that just yet though, eh?

RACING: A poor week at the office.

Dunno why, but I always picture my tipsters sitting in an office somewhere, poring over the form book or doing whatever it is they do to find their selections.  Can’t really be like that, can it?  I imagine some use their kitchen or dining room table to work at, as I do.

Anyway, it was a poor week last week with most concern being caused by Northern Monkey.  A poor Friday and Sunday meant things weren’t great, and for me at least, the current drawdown has reached the 50% of bank mark.  This is where the frustration of missing out on winning bets last Saturday really tells.  I’m struck with a case of the “If onlys…”

Elsewhere and Bet Alchemist posted a small profit, and Bookiebashing Racing Tracker a small loss.  I really shouldn’t get disillusioned.  The racing portfolio as a whole is running at an ROI of 22%+ (although this is almost entirely down to the performance of the BB Race Tracker being so bloomin’ extraordinarily good!) which is certainly not to be sniffed at.  I guess I just want my guys to do well for their sake as well as mine.  Northern Monkey is a good egg, one of the nice guys and who puts in a heck of a lot of work.  I don’t like it when someone like that is going through a rough spell.

Bet Alchemist (100pt bank): Staked 104pts, -13.442pts, roi -12.92%, roc -13.44%, High 0pts, DD -13.442pts, Max DD -24.338pts

SPORTS: I need a ‘summer’ portfolio.

Another very quiet week on the sports front, and that’s going to be the way of it for the next couple of months, I guess.  With the main European football leagues coming to an end The Poacher will be quieter than he is say, in November or December.  Having said that, he is still active and there are still some games for him to go at so no doubt things will tick over.

No NFL for Touchdown Profit and Sports Service 1 is hardly prolific when it comes to number of bets being issued at any time.  So it occurred to me that I perhaps need a “summer” portfolio of tipsters.  There are a couple of really good tennis services out there that I should perhaps start to consider for next year, and you know what?  I’d love to find a top drawer cricket tipster.  I’m amazed at the lack of cricket services.  It’s the nation’s second sport, after all.  We have various county competitions, T20 tournaments from around the world screened live on TV, Test Matches, ODIs, etc.  It’s not as if there’s a lack of sport for a tipster to go at, all year round.

I know there are people out there who trade on cricket matches in-play.  Would be lovely to see a good tipster emerge.  If I could have a Christmas wish in May, I think that would be it.

GOLF: Winner landed, but a mere inch away from a huge return!

First of all, a big “Well done!” to PGA Profit who tipped up USPGA play-off winner, Justin Thomas at 16/1.  Unusually, the tip was to back Thomas win only, and that strategy clearly paid off.  By beating Zalatoris on the third hold of the play-off, the return from Thomas pulled PGA Profit into profit and a high water mark for the year.  Well done them!

However, it looked like we were on for a big win for Weekly Golf Value who had a decent stake (because of the level of perceived value in the 150/1 pre-tournament price) on Mito Pereira.  On the 17th, his ball stopped literally an inch short of the hold on his putt for a birdie.  Had it gone in, Pereira would have been two shots clear with just the one hole to play, and I feel strongly that what happened next wouldn’t have had he had that breathing space.

As it was, Pereira drove off the last tee just one shot clear, and stuck his ball into a brook.  That clearly shook him, and from a human point of view, watching the inevitable breakdown didn’t make for comfortable viewing.  I really felt for the lad.  I’ve got to admit, I was also cursing him for messing up and denying me a big return, but yeah, I really felt for him.  Hopefully he’ll bounce back better for the experience.

Still a profitable week for WGV with a second player finding the frame.

Elsewhere Golf Insider showed a small loss on the bets I placed.  There were a couple of picks issued that I didn’t get on in different markets and had I done so I would have netted an overall profit.  As it was, I showed a small loss.

The play-off nerves were somewhat calmed by the fact that Tour Tips had Zalatoris at 30.1 so I was guaranteed a profit whichever player emerged triumphant.

Sadly, the poor run of The Rainmaker continues and despite Ben Coley tipping up Tommy Fleetwood who placed at 80/1, he also produced a loss (albeit a small one, and like Golf Insider, I believe his other tips generated a profit on the week).

RACING: Frustration…but a winning week!?!

I mentioned it recently, and I think last week my fears were realised.  Reading Sunday’s emails from both Bet Alchemist and Northern Monkey, it would seem that Saturday was a nicely profitable day for both.  As you know if you’ve been reading these posts, for the next three months or so I’m not able to place bets on Saturdays.  I guess it was only a matter of time before I suffered as a result by missing out on good profits.

The situation was made even more frustrating by the fact that both Bet Alchemist and NMP had losing weeks for me overall, albeit only just in the case of the latter.

Onto brighter things and another good winning bet for the Bookiebashing Racing Tracker.  Not a winner from the four horses that made up a Lucky 15 bet, but all four placing meant a profit of just under 16 points overall.  I’m steeling myself for something of a ‘correction’ here, as running at the 109% ROI level I’m at right now is unsustainable.

So all in all, thanks to that Lucky 15 bet, a profitable week.  So why am I feeling frustrated?  Sure, missing out on profit on Saturday is annoying, but it’s hardly the end of days is it?

SPORTS: All quiet.

Not very much at all to write about from a Sports tipster point of view this week.

Just one bet from Sports Service 1 which lost, and a shade over a point profit from The Poacher means that I grew ROC by the fine amount of 0.02%!  This sort of betting isn’t for adrenaline junkies, eh?

GOLF: The going is still tough…

I thought after two services bagged the winner of the US Tour last week that we had perhaps turned a corner, but alas no-one was able to step up to the mark and keep the momentum going.

It wasn’t a bad week for Weekly Golf Value which has been ticking over by finding a regular supply of golfers to place of late.  It’s been a wee while since it notched a winner, but no serious damage to the profit and loss line has been suffered.  Two to place over Stateside this week at 75/1 and 28/1 meant a small overall profit for the week.

Tour Tips also had the 28/1 placed golfer so made a touch of profit too, but after that, things aren’t so good.

The Rainmaker tipped 14/1 Justin Thomas who placed, and also secured the place part of an each way bet in a Top Nationality market, but it was another losing week overall and we’re now on a drawdown of more than 50% of the bank.  Time to start turning it around, I reckon!

Elsewhere and it was all blanks for last week’s heroes Golf Insider and PGA Profit, and the same for Ben Coley too.

It’s the season’s second major coming up this week, the USPGA, so expect our tipsters to be busy.  It’s going to be a mad one.

RACING: Bookiebashing Race Tracker proving to be a real leader!

We hear a lot in football about teams having or not having leaders.  Obviously the skipper should be “a leader”, but we hear how other players in successful teams lead from the front, set the example, and drag their teams up when they’re struggling.

Well, the Bookiebashing Racing Tracker is playing that leadership role for the racing portfolio which is otherwise struggling.  Last week we had a Lucky 15 bet that didn’t include a winner, but did boast four placed horses at 25/1, 14/1, 9/1 and 6/1).  That bet netted a good profit and although a few points were given back towards the end of the week, it ensured another really good week both as an individual service and for the racing services across the board.

That total profit was made despite Bet Alchemist (a couple of points dropped) and Northern Monkey (a couple of points made) essentially cancelling each other out.  The latter is simmering.  I can feel it, and I’m just hoping that soon enough it is going to explode.  Wayne is certainly capable of it, and we’re getting to his strongest time of year.  Let’s see what next week brings.

SPORTS: Playing to strengths.

It was a small losing week overall for the Sports services, but darting expert Sports Service 1 had a very good week, picking up another couple of points profit from the three picks I was able to support.  Last week I wrote about how the way in which the bookmakers had really sharpened up their act when it comes to pricing up darts markets had made the darting betting landscape a much tougher one to survive in, never mind eke out a consistent profit.  It’s noticeable however that SS1 is now giving more tips in the much less glamorous Euro Tour events which don’t have the same fanfare and publicity that the big championship events receive from Sky.  Does this mean that the prices aren’t quite given as much attention by the trading teams, thus allowing an expert like SS1 to exploit opportunities?  There’s no definitive answer to that, but I can see a logic, and thus far we’re being rewarded by good, winning bets.

A first for me too as Touchdown Profit offered up two picks in the NFL Draft markets.  Can’t say I watched any of the draft.  I may enjoy watching games of a Sunday evening through the season, but that’s as far as I go when it comes to the sport.  Looking forward to the new season though.

Finally, not such a good week for The Poacher.  I’ve not dared look to see if the Saturday picks I couldn’t back might have made a difference.
