In yesterday’s member’s email, Wayne of Northern Monkey described next Tuesday, the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, as “shaping up to be the most important betting day of the year”. No pressure there, then!
As you’ll see from the figures below, I’m currently at a maximum drawdown level with Northern Monkey for the year to date (which let us remember, is only just two months old, so it’s certainly nothing approaching panic stations). The fact is that a number of points have been dropped by Wayne pursuing his historically successful Cheltenham strategy of getting stakes rolled up onto Cheltenham fancies at good prices. These points lost are included in the figures, but the successful bets which have got stakes rolling onto runners next week, are not. Which is to say that, given a fair Cotswold wind, the numbers could look vastly different come the end of the Festival.
Of course, they may not. There is no guarantee of success just because it’s Cheltenham. But regardless of the eventual outcome this year, the strategy has proved fruitful for Wayne in years past, and I’m sure it will do so again, even if (and here’s hoping it’s not) 2021 turns out to be something of an anticlimax.
This time last year we headed into Cheltenham with many suggesting it should be cancelled. We were on the brink of national lockdown and in retrospect, perhaps having huge crowds pressed closely together over four days wasn’t the best in the circumstances. This year instead of feeling scared, gloomy, and anxious over the future, we have positive and encouraging signs that the vaccine roll-out is having the desired effect and we have plans and a timescale for some real normalcy to return to our everyday lives. But the virus is still out there folks, and like many of us I’m sure, I’m still hearing of the lives of friends and family being terribly effected by it…so keep being careful, washing hands, wearing masks, and generally looking out for each other. As that proud and famous philosopher Del Boy once said, “you know it makes sense”.
