GOLF: A 500/1 shot in the frame, but another losing week overall.

The headline kinda sums it up (which I suppose is what headlines are meant to do, no?) – Weekly Golf Value’s Andrew Wilson birdied the last two holes of the final round to claim a place in the Top 7 and at 500/1 it meant a decent return and a profit for WGV on the week.  But elsewhere it was slim pickings with just one to place at 80/1 in Spain for Ben Coley.

Blanks for PGA Profit, European Tour, Golf Insider, and The Rainmaker meant it was another miserable week and the slump continues.

There’s not much more to say than that, so I’ll leave it there for this week, and hope for better next.

RACING: BB Racing Tracker maintains momentum.

That one huge winning Lucky 15 supplied courtesy of the Bookiebashing Racing Tracker a few weeks back had singlehandedly got the racing portfolio moving forwards, and at quite a rate.  It had felt that that momentum had stalled a little, until last Thursday, when the Racing Tracker provided another sizeable fillip.

The winning bet wasn’t anywhere as big as the previous one, but a placed horse at 22/1, a winner and two more placed kicked up a profit of a shade under 30 points, and very welcome it was too.  It means that the BB Tracker is now running at an ROI of 188% with allied bank growth of 137%…and I’ve only been using it a few weeks!  Will we see a “correction”?  Who knows?  We’re as likely to see another good winner as a drawdown.  That’s variance for you.

Elsewhere and there are just a green shoot or two appearing for Northern Monkey.  Nothing spectacular, but a couple of nicely profitable days and with May on the horizon we’re really not that far away from the time of year that has traditionally seen our erstwhile tipster make good money.

A few thoughts next week on Racing Service 1, who has had a far from vintage season, but in whom my faith remains unaffected.

Until then…

SPORTS: Where have my Saturdays gone?

So it would transpire that from now until roughly mid-September, Saturdays are looking like a no-bet day.  Which is a bit of  a problem because Saturday of course, tends to be the busiest betting day of the week,

I play cricket on Saturdays, and in their wisdom the league organization that my club plays within have brought the start time of matches forward an hour.  I also coach cricket through the week, including Saturday mornings.  So whereas previously getting bets on involved a bit of a mad rush to get home quickly after coaching, sticking down the money and rushing to wherever it was I was playing, now I’ve got no chance.  It’s irritating.

The Saturday just gone we had a pre-season friendly match arranged, at the new start time.  So I wasn’t able to put the money down on any of the bets from Sports Service 1 or The Poacher that were released that day.  And this will be the pattern of things for the next few months.  I guess it will likely impact my betting on horses to an even greater extent.  There’s not much point in worrying or fretting about it though.  Just one of those things.  It will be interesting to see just to what exact extent it all effects the amount being bet, my turnover in other words.

I’d better have a good season.  Make sacrificing Saturday betting worthwhile!

GOLF: A week to forget!

As a whole, the golf portfolio is struggling to perform at the moment in a way that I’ve not known it to since I started betting on the sport with any level of seriousness.  After a completely blank week, with no golfer I’d backed landing in the places, five of the seven services are on their worst drawdown for the year to date.  The two that aren’t are European Tour which because of the lack of tournaments on the DP Tour haven’t issued a pick for weeks, and Ben Coley, who took a week off following the exertions of The Masters.

Here are the ROC figures for 2022 to date for each of those in their deepest drawdown:

Golf Insider: -15.8%, PGA Profit -21.6%, Tour Tips -25.57%, Weekly Golf Value 37.73%, The Rainmaker -25.95%.

Clearly Weekly Golf Value is the outlier as it is coming down from a previously impressive high point, and what we’re seeing is essentially a reversion to the mean, a correction, call it what you will.  And that is where the hope springs from, because as that one falls towards their longer term ROI figure, we’re expecting the underperforming services to rise towards theirs.  What we don’t know of course, is when that will happen.

And that is why bank management and a steadfast mentality is so important to our long term chances of success.

Golf Insider (200pt bank): Staked 138pts, -31.61pts, roi -22.9%, roc -15.8%, High 29.24pts, DD -60.85pts, Max DD -60.85pts

SPORTS: I should learn to keep my mouth shut!

I may have gone a bit early last week, in my wholesome praise of the sports portfolio.  I’ve been in this game for long enough now to know that tempting the fates is not a bright thing to do.

To be fair, it’s hardly been a disastrous week, with only a couple of points dropped.

There was no win for Sports Service 1 and as a result it’s now on its worst drawdown we’ve seen this year, but before we start with the tearing of hair and gnashing of teeth, some context is required.  That drawdown is now at a grand total of 1.7 points.  Hardly deserving of a gnash that, is it?

As for The Poacher, well a bit of a mixed week and a small loss overall.  Again, nothing disastrous.

So let’s not panic.  But at the same time, let’s not do the equivalent of prancing about in front of the Big Cheese of the Betting Gods making the ‘L’ loser sign after a good week.  Which is, I think, what I managed to do in last week’s post.

Sports Service 1 (30pt bank): Staked 25.5pts, +1.56pts, roi 6.11%, roc 5.2%, High 3.26pts, DD -1.7pts, Max DD -1.7pts

GOLF: Not so masterful at The Masters.

Scottie Scheffler played some amazing golf over the course of the Masters and to my untrained eye, was clearly a deserving winner.  Seems a nice bloke too, very unassuming.  But, and this is the important thing, none of our tipsters put him up as a bet and I hope, in a quiet moment of reflection, he recognizes this and that makes a promise to himself that as and when a tipster does put him up, he’s going to do the decent thing and make sure he wins.  It’s the least he can do.

To be honest it’s all a bit heavy going at the moment.  Only one service still – Weekly Golf Value – showing a profit on the year to date for me.  And only Ben Coley coming in with anything like a meaningful amount of profit last week (Tour Tips ended in the black too, but by less than a point).

Oh, well.  It will all turn around, I’m sure.  And my money, quite literally, is on that happening this week.  And if not, my money will be on the week after, or the week after that, or the following week, or the week after that one…..

RACING: The morning after the night before.

Well, no excitement to even approach that we saw last week.  It’s very much been a case of the morning after the night before with everything feeling a little bit flat.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read last week’s racing Bet Diary post.

Bet Alchemist tried its best and enjoyed a good week which included tipping the winner of the Scottish National on Saturday.  The profit BA provided meant that the week was more or less one that broke even overall.

Northern Monkey really is feeling the pinch at the moment and I hope that the traditionally strong summer flat racing months will soon begin to claw the losses back.  As for the Bookiebashing Racing Tracker, this was one of those weeks (and I imagine there will be plenty of them whilst we wait for another big win to come along) when not much happened.  Indeed, I didn’t place a multiple bet between Monday and Wednesday.  I have decided that I’m going to look to bet each way patents (three horses) as well as Lucky 15s (four) and have started to follow that strategy.

Aintree and THE Grand National this week.  Let’s see what happens.

SPORTS: Everything I want sports betting to be.

And no, I don’t mean making making money hand over fist like some hyped up Pablo Escobar, not knowing what to do with my cash I’ve got so much of it.  I mean, that would be nice, don’t get me wrong.  But love Sports Service 1 and The Poacher though I do, it’s not likely now is it.

“So, Mr Bet Diary.  I see you’re making more from your betting on darts and Spanish La Liga 2 than the GDP of Germany.  I think it may be time to close your account.  This is a trader’s decision and you have no right of appeal.  Thank you for your custom.

(We will of course allow you to play our super douper slots – just visit our Casino and immerse yourself in pleasure, Mr BD.  You know it makes sense!  And here, have 10 free spins on us if you deposit just £1.5m)”

The sports portfolio is doing the job I wanted it to do last year, and that is just keep ticking over.  It balances out the more volatile sections of the overall portfolio, steadily accumulating profit with no real big dramas.  The first quarter of the year has seen this happen wonderfully well.  If we can carry this on, then I’ll be a happy bunny.

Sports Service 1 (30pt bank): Staked 24pts, +3.06pts, roi 12.75%, roc 10.2%, High 3.26pts, DD -0.2pts, Max DD -1.55pts

GOLF: Looking forward to The Masters

Augusta looks like a beautiful golf course.  I don’t think I ever want to go, just in case it’s one of those places that looks spectacular on television but in real life, less so.  A bit like Old Trafford (I’m joking, before all you Man U fans get ants in your pants – although it is a bit of a dump, isn’t it?).

And it will be The Masters that I’ll be watching from Thursday night this week, hopefully with a couple of golfers to cheer on through the final round on Sunday.

As for this last week, it was all pretty quiet with no DP World Tour event taking place.  Stakes were relatively low for the week, and it was all just a little low key.  The golfing equivalent to the Saturday racing the weekend before Cheltenham.

Annoyingly, Ben Coley tipped the winner at 33/1 in-play.  Annoying, because I tend not to back the in-play bets from any of the services.  Perhaps I should!

The only service to turn a profit – and that was a very small one – was Weekly Golf Value who found Troy Merritt at 100/1 who placed.

I’m sure this week coming will be a lot more exciting.  And let’s hope it’s a lot more profitable too.
